The Value of Staying Involved

As we move through 2026, I often reflect on how much our profession has evolved and how important organized optometry has been along the way. Like many of us, I entered optometry focused on caring for patients and building a practice within my community. Over time, I came to understand that protecting our ability to provide that care depends on something larger than any one of us—it depends on staying involved.

The Florida Optometric Association continues to play a critical role in protecting, promoting, and progressing optometry throughout our state. The professional opportunities we have today did not happen overnight. They exist because previous generations of optometrists invested their time, energy, and commitment to ensure our profession continued to move forward.

Involvement looks different for everyone. Some choose leadership roles, while others contribute by maintaining membership, attending local society meetings, supporting advocacy efforts, or mentoring younger colleagues. Every level of participation strengthens our collective voice and helps ensure optometry remains a vital part of Florida healthcare. One of the most rewarding parts of organized optometry is the relationships built along the way. Whether connecting with colleagues, guiding a new graduate, or meeting with legislators to explain the care we provide to our patients, these moments remind us that our profession is strongest when we work together.

Many of us became involved because someone reached out and encouraged us to attend a meeting, participate in an event, or simply get involved. That small invitation often makes a lasting impact. I encourage each of us to extend that same invitation to a colleague or young optometrist and help continue building the future of our profession.

Optometry’s success in Florida has always depended on engaged members who care not only about today’s practice, but about tomorrow’s profession. Together, by staying connected and involved, we ensure that optometry continues to grow, adapt, and thrive for generations to come.

I look forward to seeing many of you at upcoming society meetings and at the 2026 FOA Convention this July in Tampa as we continue moving our profession forward—together.

Sincerely,
Susan Summerton O.D., CNS, DACBN
Trustee
