A Year of Service, Honor, and Resilience

As President of the Florida Optometric Association, this past year has been one of the most humbling, busy, exciting, and at times grueling periods of my professional life. From traveling across our great state to representing Florida optometry on the national stage, I’ve had the privilege of engaging with so many of our dedicated doctors—hearing your stories, sharing our challenges, and celebrating our collective successes.

One of the greatest personal honors came this May, when I had the opportunity to present the Lenny Cherdack Student Legislative Award to Dr. Denise Bernal, a remarkable student from my alma mater, Nova Southeastern University College of Optometry, during their Senior Awards Luncheon on May 8th. The following day, I was deeply honored to return and deliver Optometry’s Oath to the graduating Class of 2025—a moment that reaffirmed the values and vision that unite us as a profession.

This year’s legislative session was particularly intense. Although scheduled for 60 days, it extended to 105 days as lawmakers negotiated a final budget. Many of us made repeated trips to Tallahassee to advocate for optometry and for the patients we serve. Despite strong support and significant effort, time ran out, and several important bills—ours included—did not cross the finish line. It was a disappointing end to a session filled with effort and determination, but also one that has fueled our momentum for the year ahead.

Amid these challenges, there is still much to be encouraged by. The number of practicing optometrists continues to grow, while the number of ophthalmologists is steadily declining. This shift in the healthcare landscape only reinforces the essential role that optometrists play in meeting the eye care needs of our communities. With increased demand and expanding opportunities, this is a truly exciting time to be an optometrist.

To every FOA member who showed up—whether in person, through advocacy, or by staying informed—thank you. Your dedication and involvement continue to strengthen our voice and shape the future of our profession.

With pride and purpose,

Dr. Steven L. Silverstone
