Call to Action: Support Eye Health and Safety

We appreciate every optometrist getting involved with the telemedicine bill, but we need your help! Over the next 24 hours, please email EVERY Florida Senator!

Dear Senator,
 
During the current, 2019, legislative session, a Telehealth bill has been working its way through the Florida House and Senate that would allow optometrists to provide Telehealth services. Of great concern, CS/CS/HB 23 would also permit and enable "express online eye exams" without any language to protect the public eye health and safety from the reality of "online refraction only services." To protect the public from harm and prevent a stand-alone refraction service from being provided through Telehealth, your FOA has proposed the following bill language in the form of an amendment:

"A prescription for lenses, spectacles, eyeglasses, contact lenses, or any other optical devices may not be made based on telehealth services such as telephone calls or interviews, email messages, internet questionnaires, or facsimile transmissions, or be based solely on determining the refractive error of the human eye by the use of a computer controlled device such as an auto-refractor."
